CIMA, was formed in 18th April, 1919 as the Institute of Cost & work Accountants, by a group of legal professionals and businessman who wanted to develop an approach to accounting that would meet the demands of a rapidly changing business world. Industrialization had led to large scale, complex businesses providing unprecedented challenges in management. Employers needed a new form of in house accountant to provide in addition to accounts, better analysis of cost & of operation to inform performance management. The new Institute soon gained the backing of leading industrialists including, Lord lever hulme who became its president.

Advances in technology & Globalization made business ever more complex over the 20th century & the role of the accountant in business became more significant. It expanded to include provision of a wider range of information and the emphasis shifted from accounting to management.

The Status of Management accounting as a distinct branch of the accounting profession was recognized by the granting of Royal Charter in 1975.

Examinations:
Objective Test – 90 Minutes Computer based and on demand examination – all throughout the year. Results immediately.

Case Studies:
Three-hour exams at each level of the qualification that you can take during four windows (Feb, May, Aug & Nov) per year. To complete a level, you‘ll need to pass all three Objectives Tests (of have an exemption) before sitting the case study exam. Results within a month.

3 – 4 Year Completion: You can expect to spend between 3-4 months studying for each of the Objective Tests, followed by another 6-8 weeks preparing for the Case Study exam. You should aim to complete the CIMA Professional Qualification while working is invaluable, as it gives you skills & knowledge you can immediately apply to your working life.
